City Council Update 8/19/24
Hi neighbors! After each meeting, you can find need-to-knows, news updates, and upcoming events on this blog! Take a look below and stay informed on what’s happening in our city!
Special Recognition
The Council was pleased to honor our very own Olympian Rajeev Ram! He was a graduate of Carmel High School and is one of the best tennis players in the world! Rajeev most recently won his second silver medal at the Olympics! We are so proud of you!
We were pleased to meet the four-legged members of our Carmel Police force! The Council is proud of the contributions of Canine Jax and Canine Archie in keeping our city safe!
Public Comment
Two community members expressed their concerns regarding sectarian violence occuring in Bangladesh
Another community member spoke about the meaning of Rakshabandan a holiday celebrating the bonds of relationships between siblings. Prior to the meeting city councilors had these threads tied on their wrists.
The last community member spoke about the importance of saving trees in our city and being responsible with our development.
Committee Updates
The Finance, Utilities, and Rules committee discussed Ordinance D-2719-24 regarding the use of TIF bonds to fund the Proscenium project and gave the council a positive recommendation.
The Land Use and Special Studies committee continued discussing UDO and will be taking up the Interlocal agreement between the city and the township that supports the Carmel Clay parks department.
The Carmel Department of Parks and Recreation gave us an exciting update on how things are going in Carmel! Over the summer, the city saw highs in summer camp enrollment, water park attendance, and revenue! We are so excited to see the department doing so well! I am personally proud to have worked on brining the first of many free sunscreen dispensers to Westermeir Park and Inlow Park. https://youarecurrent.com/2024/08/19/free-sunscreen-dispensers-installed-in-carmel-parks/
The Municipal Water Utility Department gave us an update on the refinancing of the utility bonds. This reaffirmed their goal to fund necessary improvements & improve the water utility bond rating. This will eliminate the future sudden large water rate increases for us as a community & replacing them with an expected 3% annual increase.
Ordinances and Resolutions
Ordinance D-2696-23, which would establish a speed limit of 20 mph within roundabouts, remains in the Finance, Utilities, and Rules Committee.
Ordinance D-2719-24, discussing the use of TIF bonds to fund the Proscenium project, there were questions regarding the traffic and parking. Council agreed to table this dicussion to give the opportunity to ask more questions and gather more information.
Ordinance D-2726-24 This approves and adopts a third amendment to the Interlocal agreement that helps continue to the Independent functioning of the Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation Department for the next 2 years. This was sent to the Land Use Committee for further discussion.
Ordinance D-2727-24, which abolishes the Carmel Cable and Telecommunications Commission, was approved with a vote of 8-0. The Telecommunications Comission was established and extremely active in the 1980"s. Over time the regulation of telecommunications has been removed from local control and placed under state and federal control. However, the desire was to recognize the hard work of this commision and to allow them to make a final report.
